Moon Observing Campaign 2021

Latest observations added at the top.

Images taken with 5inch or 6inch APO refractor or 13inch Newtonian
Recording with DMK41 or ASI120MC ASI174MM camera using FireCapture software. Processing in AstroStakkert!2, Registax 6 and Photoshop CS2.

2021-11-07 18:28PST. An interesting combination of the crescent Moon with Venus was visible in the evening. As an extra event the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was passing in front of the Moon that evening. HST is much smaller than the ISS and in a higher orbit so there was no expectation to see structure resolution. Actually HST is only 3mag in brightness so the best I could do is a composite of multiple time exposures showing the passage. HST is the faint dashed line crossing the lower part of the Moon. 6 exposures at 4sec were super imposed for the composite image.

2021-10-15 02:54UT We had a nice view of the Moon this evening and using the 6inch refractor I made a 2 panel mosaic to capture the full disk. (Click on image for full scale)

2021-10-15 02:59UT. The mountain ring of Mare Imbrium is always nice to look at. This is a 3 panel mosaic to capture it from Plato to Copernicus in sunrise.. (Click on image for full scale)

2021-10-15 03:20UT Looking even closer at the Vallis Alpes region. There is a small crater with a particularly bright ejecta blanket. This is Cassini-K. It must be a very young crater.

2021-06-21 04:45UT Back home from the balcony a collection of craters along the terminator with the 160mm refractor and ASI 174MM camera.

2021-06-13. Another nice visit to the dark sky observing site of the Trivally Stargazers. In the evening sky there was a nice crescent Moon in a constellation with Venus, Mars and the stars Castor and Pollux of Gemini the twins.

2021-03-27. We are opening the 2021 campaign at a date close to the full Moon with libration tilting crates from the lunar south (like Bailly) towards us. The seeing was relatively good and allowed the use of the 5x Barlow/telecentric with the 130mm refractor. Progressing from North to South.
